A Few Thoughts About Church

Acts 2:47 WEL Praising God, and being in the good graces of all the people. The Lord added daily to the church those who were being saved.

The church is not an organization or building. It is the people who believe in Jesus Christ.

The word church is ἐκκλησία ekklēsía (G1577). It means a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place; an assembly (Thayer’s). We are called out of the world and that worldview into the family of God and a new worldview. We are citizens of a heavenly country. Compare a few other verses showing that the church is the people.

  • Acts 8:1 NIV And Saul approved of their killing him. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

  • Acts 11:26 NIV And when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

  • 1 Corinthians 10:32 NIV Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God.

Why do we go to church, and what are we to be doing?

This includes singles, single parents, young parents, old parents, grandparents, widows/widower, etc. It also includes the abused, the molested, the hurt, the hurting, the victorious, the struggling, the needy, the sick, the healthy, those struggling with addictions, PTSD, fear, depression, etc.

    • Teaching

      • The Bible and its plain, normal sense

      • Doctrine, what we believe

      • Doctrine, what we live

      • Apologetics, why we believe what we do

    • Learning

      • The Bible and its plain, normal sense

  • Unbelievers are welcome and welcomed.

Who is the meeting of the church for?

  • Believers, this is the main reason

  • Unbelievers, this is important for witness but not the main reason

What will happen to the church?

  • Matthew 16:18 NLT ​​ Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means 'rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

    • Upon this rock refers to Peter’s confession: Matthew 16:15-16 NLT Then he asked them, "But who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

    • Jesus states, “I will build my church.” People do not build it, super-pastors do not, organizations do not, Jesus Messiah will build His church. We are to witness of Him and preach the Gospel.

  • 1 Timothy 3:15 NLT So that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.

  • Hebrews 3:5-6 NLT Moses was certainly faithful in God's house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God's entire house. And we are God's house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.
