A Few Thoughts About Wisdom

What is wisdom?

B1 My simple answer is

C1 When a decision is needed, facts are gathered, and a beneficial decision is arrived at. 1 Kings 3:9 NLT Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?

C2 It is also a skill for doing something exceptionally well.

D1 Individuals: Exodus 31:3 NIV and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills.

B2 All of God’s decisions are done in wisdom, love, and holiness.

B3 It is free for the asking! One needs faith in God, believe God, ask God, and do in what He opens our minds to understand. James 1:5 NLT If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

What are the qualities of wisdom?

B1 James 3:17 NLT But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.

B2 It is the opposite of God’s wisdom: 1 Corinthians 3:19-20 NLT For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.” 20 And again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless.”

B3 Wisdom of many different types, forms, and applications: Ephesians 3:10 NLT God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

B4 Man-made wisdom is dangerous. These are rules of worship (required rules), ritual (sometimes), church covenants (be careful in signing these), and believing all is well when the man-made rules are followed. Colossians 2:23 NLT These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

What are some of the benefits of God given wisdom?

B1 Common sense and protects (from making stupid decisions): Proverbs 2:7 NLT He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.

B2 Again, protecting from making harmful decisions: Proverbs 2:8 NLT He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him.

B3 Learning and understanding: Proverbs 2:9 NLT Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go.

B4 Joy: Proverbs 3:13 NLT Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding.

B5 Assistance and how to answer in the time of persecution, apologetics, evangelism, etc.: Luke 21:15 NLT for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!

Making Godly decisions in wisdom

B1 Pray

B2 Gather facts

B3 Seek counsel

C1 God first which has already been done

C2 Those Christians who have a reputation in the church for godly wisdom. The pastor may or may not be a wise person.

C3 Be careful. We are warned. Man-made rules give only an appearance of wisdom, not wisdom: Colossians 2:23 NLT These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

C4 Be careful with whom you seek wisdom. Be warned: Colossians 2:8 NLT Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

C5 Those who have experience in the topic/area that a decision is to be made are helpful.

B4 Seek the Scriptures for a rule, a law, a principle, an example, etc.
