When the devil came to Jesus, was Jesus tempted to sin, challenged, or both?
My translation and notes on Matthew 4:3
3 When the tempter came to him, he said, “If yous are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
[Jesus is being tempted. Is this a seduction to sin or a test, that is, being challenged to do wrong? Sometimes there is a little of both. It seems that Jesus is being challenged more than seduced. Jesus was being tested. Adam was tested in the garden and did not do what God required of him. Jesus was tested but did do what God required of Him. Jesus passed this supreme test and so was qualified to begin His ministry. Jesus was also seduced to sin, which we know from Hebrews 4:15 For we don’t have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but was in every way tempted like us, yet without any sin].
We will be challenged and seduced. There is one who understands (Jesus), and He is the one who can help us avoid and overcome. He overcame. He is strong and mighty.
Hebrews 4:16 Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
