The Anvil
by John Clifford
Last eve I paused beside a blacksmith’s door,
And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;
Then looking, I saw upon the floor,
Old hammers worn with beating years of time.
“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
To wear and batter all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he and then with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”
“And so,” I thought, “The anvil of God’s Word,
For ages skeptic blows have beat upon,
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unchanged, the hammers gone.”
God is truth
It is His core attribute. Thus, His love is true love. His kindness is true kindness. His justice is true justice. His offers for salvation are true offers (genuine). His Scriptures, His Word, are true words.
Psalms 33:4 (UKJV) For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
Titus 1:2 (UKJV) In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.
John 14:6 (UKJV) Jesus says unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.
Daniel 10:21 (NKJV) But I will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of Truth. (No one upholds me against these, except Michael your prince).
God’s Word Never Disappears
They never disappear or lose effectiveness. There are no unfilled promises.
Matthew 5:18 (NMB NT) For truly I say to you, till heaven and earth perish, not one jot or one tittle of the law shall escape, till all be fulfilled.
Psalms 119:89 (NKJV) Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.
Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV) The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
God’s Word Reveals
Psalms 119:130 (NKJV) The entrance of Your words gives light. It gives understanding to the simple.
Daniel 2:22 (NKJV) He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.
Jeremiah 17:10 (NKJV) I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.
Hebrews 4:12-13 (NKJV) For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
The Scriptures are the only thing we have that is 100% truth. Let us read and study the Scriptures, then we will know truth and will be able to discern truth from error.
