Hebrews 2:5-9 (NKJV) For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. 6 But one testified in a certain place, saying:
“What is man that You are mindful of him,
Or the son of man that You take care of him?
7 You have made him a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
And set him over the works of Your hands.
8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”
For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
V5 “For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels.” The world to come probably refers to the Millennium when Jesus rules the world from Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:9). That kingdom was not entrusted to angels to administer but to Jesus the Messiah. Jesus is superior to the angels. One would think that the human Jesus was weaker than the angels, but Jesus is the God-man.
V6 “But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him?” This quotes comes from Psalm 8:4-6. There are many quotes from the Old Testament proving the validity of this writer’s message. One would expect this since the letter was written to Jews showing the superiority, deity of Jesus, and the humanity of Jesus. Why should God care about the total human race rebelling against Him? One would expect punishment but not an offer of deliverance. Because of His love and compassion God has offered salvation to those who believe in Jesus. See Luke 19:10, Ezekiel 34:11-12, John 3:16, and 1 Timothy 1:15. The words son of man are singular in both Hebrews and Greek. It might refer to humanity collectively as those created to serve God tasked with taking care of the earth. It might refer to THE Son of Man, Jesus.
V7 “You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands.” Humans are weaker than angels. God has a purpose for both people and angels as servants. God is the sovereign King and administrates His kingdom often by delegating tasks. Glory and honor refer to the complex beauty of human design, abilities, and gifts for service. Yet, Because of sin, our hearts and minds were in darkness (Colossians 1:13 and 1 Peter 2:9). After salvation all believers should glory God is all we do and say.
V8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.” “You” refers to God the Father. It is the Father who has made the Lord Jesus King of all kings and Lord of all lords. He left nothing that is not under His authority. Even today, not all things are under God’s authority. The world, because of Adam’s sin and God’s curse, is now in rebellion and authority to other things.
V9 “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.” Jesus was conceived in the Virgin’s womb and is fully human, a little lower than the angels to redeem humanity–He is fully human. He needed to be fully human to be a full and complete sacrifice, on the Cross dying for OUR sins, not His for He never sinned (2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Peter 2:22, and 1 John 3:5).
