My Daily Thoughts–Hebrews 3:1-6

  • by

Hebrews 3:1-6 (LHB) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; 2 Who was faithful to him who appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. 3 For this man was esteemed worthy of more glory than Moses, just as he who has built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone; but he that built all things is God. 5 And Moses truly was faithful in all his house, as a servant, as a testimony of those things which were to be spoken afterwards; 6 But Christ was faithful as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

V1 “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus…” Holy brethren refers to believers who have been justified by God because of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. People heard the Gospel and believed. See John 3:14-15, Galatians 3:24, and Romans 8:1.

Partakers refers to those who join in a common experience. The Greek word is (G3353) μέτοχος métochos, which means partners. Compare Luke 5:7. The partners in Luke 5:7 are Peter, James, and John. The partners here are believers. All believers are adopted by God and servants of the Lord Jesus.

Jesus is referred to as the Apostle which is an authoritative missionary messenger. Jesus is the High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Our profession is the Greek word (G3671) ὁμολογία homología, which means our common creed and testimony. Hebrews 3:1 AMP – “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, [thoughtfully and attentively] consider the Apostle and High Priest whom we confessed [as ours when we accepted Him as Savior], namely, Jesus;”

V2 “…Who was faithful to him who appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.” God views faithfulness as extremely important. The greatest example is the Lord Jesus but Moses (Numbers 12:7) is also mentioned. The Greek word for “faithful” is (G4103) πιστός pistós, which means “faithful, to be trusted, reliable” (Vine). God is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9), God’s words (Acts 13:34–sure), and the Lord’s servants (Matthew 24:45). Whatever is asked or commanded will be completed correctly. The Greek word for “appointed” is (G4160) ποιέω poiéō, which means do, make, etc., and here it is understood as would be appointed. The idea of house is the corporate group. Moses was appointed over Israel. “Note the comparison of Moses and Jesus. Moses is held in high esteem by Israel, but Jesus is not an equal. Moses was faithful in God’s house, but Jesus is the one who built God’s house, so Jesus receives greater glory (verse 3).~ Dr. Brian Fulton.

V3 “For this man was esteemed worthy of more glory than Moses, just as he who has built the house has more honor than the house.” This man refers to Jesus. Jesus is greater than Moses as we read in this epistle. Jesus is the God-man; Moses is a man.

V4 “For every house is built by someone; but he that built all things is God.” This is an application that refers to creation. Moses built the house of Israel in that he was a faithful leader and teacher.

V5 “And Moses truly was faithful in all his house, as a servant, as a testimony of those things which were to be spoken afterwards…” Moses is important. He received the Law from God and delivered it to the people of Israel. Moses did not bring salvation. Moses was considered by the Jews to be one of the greatest leaders and prophets of Israel. Jesus is God, Messiah, Savior, Shepherd, Teacher, Leader, Counselor, King, etc.

V6 “…But Christ was faithful as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.” This house is all those who believe in Jesus. If indicts a condition. We are truly members of Christ’s body if we remain faithful and adhere to the teachings of Jesus and His apostles. Confidence refers to the promises of God; He will accomplish was He promised. We rejoice in Him and all His ways. Note that Moses was a servant, but Jesus is the Son. Jesus is superior.
