1 Peter 1:3-5 (NKJV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
V3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…” Applying Grandville Sharp’s rule (https://www.gotquestions.org/Granville-Sharp-Rule.html) this would read “Blessed by the God even Father…” shows the relationship between God and the Man Jesus Christ. Lord refers to the hereditary title and honor of position. Lord has the idea of authority with all it entails. Jesus’s authority is the greatest and most powerful. The Greek word for “begotten” is (G313) ἀναγεννάω anagennaó, which means a new birth. It is used twice in the NT here and in V23.
V4 “…to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you…” Inheritance brings good things not evil. The inheritance forChristians includes: 1) eternity in heaven, 2) fellowship with God, 3) enjoying His perfect leadership, 4) receiving the Holy Spirit, 5) having the gifts of the Holy Spirit, 6) God’s watchfulness over us, 7) God’s guidance and wisdom, 8) God’s help in temptation, 9) answers to prayer, and 10) serving Him forever.
V5 “…who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” The Greek word for “kept” is (G5432) φρουρέω phroureō, which means having a close eye on something, observing closely to guard and protect. God has this ability. See Psalm 1:6, Psalm 36:18, Psalm 37:28, and Jude 1:24-25.
We learn:
- We have a living hope (Jesus is alive)
- We have a wonderful and blessed inheritance in heaven
- God keeps our souls safe
