What is God’s Style of Leadership?

What is God’s Style of Leadership?

Two basic styles: 1) total control and 2) delegator. One would be the hunter/master and the latter the shepherd.

Examples: Nimrod and Jesus

Nimrod:

  • Possibly Enki? Though Enki is listed as the grandson of Abzu. Consort would be Inanna? Also known as Ishtar, the Queen of Heaven. Another possibility might be Anshar. Marduk is another possibility.
  • Nimrod’s name means rebellion(?), possible valiant as in mighty warrior/hunter.
  • Mighty is the Hebrew word (H1368) גִּבֹּור gibbôwr, which means “An adjective meaning brave, strong, mighty (Word Study Dictionary). It has the understanding of the best, strongest, and bravest of warriors.

Josephus writes: “He (Nimrod) also said he would be revenged on God, if he should have a mind to drown the world again; for that he would build a tower too high for the waters to be able to reach and that he would avenge himself on God for destroying their forefathers” (Antiquities of the Jews, Book 1, Chapter 4). Read below to know that a shepherd style of leadership is different from the Nimrod style.

Jesus, the Sovereign Lord, King of kings and Lord of lords,

  • Has the ability and authority (of Himself) to be a leader of micromanaging. He chooses not to.
  • King David writes of the LORD being his shepherd (Psalm 23). Three things: 1) David acknowledges God has being the final authority, 2) David acknowledges that he, David, is under God’s authority, 3) God is shepherd, not dictator.
  • Psalm 80:1 speaks of God being a shepherd, “O Shepherd of Israel.
  • Ezekiel 34:12, AKJV “As a shepherd seeks out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.”
  • John 10:11, AKJV “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.”

A shepherd

  • Has the motive of love and care
  • Shows his love by caring for the flock and each individual.
  • Has kindness (most animals respond negatively to abuse).
  • Has compassion.
  • Meets the need for pasture, water, medical needs, and safety from dangerous animals and humans.
  • Seeks the lost.
  • Leads and guides, not drives (compels, forces, coerce).
  • Does not frighten; he comforts and provides peace.
  • Does not scatter but gathers them.
  • Rescues from danger.
  • Thinks of them before caring for himself (makes sure the flock has what they need and are resting, then he eats and drinks).
  • Will even die for them, if need be.
  • Will not abandon them.
  • Will not abuse them.
  • Will not ignore them.
  • Will not refuse to render care to them.

Required for Christians:

  • Christian leaders: 1 Peter 5:2-3 (MSB) Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of compulsion, but willingly; not out of greed, but out of eagerness; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
  • A Christian: 2 Timothy 2:24 (MSB) And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and forbearing.

Nimrod style:

  • Proverbs 29:2 (MSB) When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
  • 2 Chronicles 10:13-14 (MSB) And the king answered them harshly. King Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders 14 and spoke to them as the young men had advised, saying, “Whereas my father made your yoke heavy, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father scourged you with whips, I will scourge you with scorpions.”

Nimrod’s style presents the opposite of traits and actions compared to the shepherd style mentioned earlier.

Showing contrast: Matthew 20:25-28 (MSB) But Jesus called them aside and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them. 26 But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
