My Daily Thoughts—Romans 8:31-34

Romans 8:31-34 (WEL)

God Loves Us and Helps Us To Be Conquerors

31 What will we say about these things? If God [is] for us, who [can be] against us? 32 He didn’t spare his own Son but handed him over for all of us. How much more will he not also graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring an accusation against God’s chosen ones? [It is] God who justifies [them]. 34 Who will give them a sentence of guilt? Christ died, even more importantly was raised, and who is also at the right hand of God and makes intercession for us.

V31 What will we say about these things? If God [is] for us, who [can be] against us?

Paul has taught a lot of doctrine. What applications are there? If God is for us is because of faith in God’s Son Jesus Christ, who can be against us? No one, because God is the Sovereign. God’s sovereignty is not that of a ruthless control freak as some theologies believe. God’s sovereignty is that of the great King, who is a shepherd as the Bible teaches. He is omnipotent. Compare 1 Peter 3:12-14.

V32 He didn’t spare his own Son but handed him over for all of us. How much more will he not also graciously give us all things?

Jesus was the voluntary gift for humans in particular and the universe in general (Isaiah 9:6).

God gives good gifts: 1) Jesus—John 4:10, 2) the Holy Spirit given upon our faith in Jesus—Acts 2:38 and Acts 11:17, 3) God’s grace—Romans 5:15, 4) righteousness—Romans 5:17, 5) eternal life—Romans 6:23, 6) spiritual gifts—1 Corinthians 1:7, and 7) all the spiritual blessings—Ephesians 1:3.

The gifts that God gives to believers in His Son are nothing we deserve or have earned.

V33 Who will bring an accusation against God’s chosen ones? [It is] God who justifies [them].

No matter who brings an accusation against us (Zechariah 3:1, Job 1:6, and Luke 22:21), they will fail, because God has justified us (a verdict of not guilty) and imputed (something given freely to one who does not have it—James 2:23) the righteousness of Jesus.

V34 Who will give them a sentence of guilt? Christ died, even more importantly was raised, and who is also at the right hand of God and makes intercession for us.

Again, others may curse us to hell, but God, the Sovereign, has declared us righteous. Note the reason: 1) Christ died as our substitute for He bore the penalty of our sins, 2) Jesus was raised bodily proving God’s acceptance of His ministry on the Cross and Jesus’s sinlessness, 3) Jesus is now at God the Father’s right hand (the greatest honor anyone could have), and 4) Jesus now prays for us.

We learn:

  • The greatness of Jesus Christ.
  • The blessings and hope coming from God.
  • The guarantee of salvation based on our faith and the ministry of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

Questions:

  • Do you have doubts or accusations against you?
  • Are you now comforted by the promises of Scripture?
