Romans 12:19-21 (WEL) Dearly beloved, don’t seek revenge for yourself, but give room for the wrath [of God] instead, for it is written, “’Vengeance is mine; I will repay’, says the Lord.” [Deuteronomy 32:35] 20 Therefore, if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him drink, for in doing so you will heap coals of fire on his head. [Proverbs 25:21-22] 21 Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.
V19 Dearly beloved, don’t seek revenge for yourself, but give room for the wrath [of God] instead, for it is written, “’Vengeance is mine; I will repay’, says the Lord.” [Deuteronomy 32:35]
People can seek revenge by murder, theft, slander, assault, blackmail, etc. We are to pray. Our goal is to live under God’s laws and live such that it would be a witness for Jesus. Seeking revenge to hurt, damage, and payback time is the world’s way of action. Going to court is necessary to prevent repeat crimes, stop a criminal, hold a criminal accountable, etc. Crimes must be reported. Abuse of any type should also be reported.
V20 Therefore, if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him drink, for in doing so you will heap coals of fire on his head. [Proverbs 25:21-22]
This is showing kindness. Remember Jesus healed, provided food, and prayed for many people who were opposed to Him. An example of this kindness is found in 2 Kings 6:21-23.
If the enemy is trying to kill you or your family, then, if I understand Scripture, correctly, fight.
V21 Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.
This is the principle. Verses 19 and 20 are an example of actions to be lived.
We learn:
- More laws that Jesus wants us to follow.
- The principle is to try to be kind to those who are evil to us.
Questions:
- Are you asking for God’s assisting grace to obey these rules?
- Is it important to obey these rules?
