The apostle, proceeding, with great address, further to urge their contributing liberally to the proposed collection,

(1) Shows the Corinthians why he had sent Titus and his two brethren to promote the completing of it, 2 Corinthians 9:1-5.

(2) Directs and encourages them to give bountifully, deliberately, and cheerfully, 2 Corinthians 9:6-14.

(3) Solemnly thanks God for giving us Christ, and all blessings in him, 2 Corinthians 9:15.

V1 Concerning the ministering to the saints, it is really not necessary to write to you.

There are many ways to help other believers (saints). One way is financial, which helps pay bills, buy food, and other necessities. The believers in Jerusalem had financial difficulties, some perhaps from helping each other financially but also from the shunning, being black listed by the other Jews.

V2 I know the eagerness of your mind, of which I brag about you to those of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago, and your zeal has motivated many.

The people are eager to give and ready to do so. As they give, we see their sincerity, their zeal to complete this, their love, and their service. All traits we should have, too.

When we know God’s will, we must do it. The Scriptures are the surest way of knowing God’s will.

God’s will for the present life includes:

  • believe and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation
  • believe and live by the Laws of Christ
  • believe and hold tightly to God’s worldview
  • believe and live by the lifestyle taught in the New Testament
  • grow in faith by reading and studying the Bible
  • grow in ministry by helping, encouraging, motivating, fellowshipping, praying, etc., for other believers

We learn:

  • To be zealous to do God’s will.
  • To be zealous to help other believers.

Questions:

  • Are you doing God’s will?
  • Are you fellowshipping with other believers?
