John 18:7–9 (WEL) So he firmly asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I AM. If you are looking for me, let these go.” 9 (He said this so that the word which he spoke, “I have lost none of those whom you gave me,” would be fulfilled.) [John 6:39]
V7 So he firmly asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
He asks them again. Perhaps they should have some fear of God? They still show no respect or honor.
Principle: Do not suppress the truth (Romans 1:18, John 3:19–21, and 2 Thessalonians 2:10)
V8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I AM. If you are looking for me, let these go.”
Now note the care He has for His disciples. “Let these go,” and it was so.
Principle: Be aware of others to be a witness for the Gospel but also a witness such as to help deliver believers.
Jesus let the disciples see this activity as they are eyewitnesses of these things. He also is an example of bravery, doing God’s will, and securing deliverance of His servants.
V9 (He said this so that the word which he spoke, “I have lost none of those whom you gave me,” would be fulfilled.) [John 6:39]
Lost done refers to being arrested, tried, and killed. It does not refer to eternal punishment. Judas Iscariot was not under God’s protection, and he chose the consequences of his betrayal—he committed suicide.
This prophecy was fulfilled as will all future prophecy.
We learn:
- Jesus’s bravery and boldness.
- Jesus is the perfect example of telling the truth even if it hurts.
- Jesus prophesied, and it happened.
Questions:
- Do you believe future prophecy will be fulfilled as it is written?
- Would you have the strength and boldness like Jesus?
