Is Mocking a Sin?

If mocking is defined as teasing, then there is no problem. The problem with teasing is that it never ends, which can cause severe emotional distress. If mocking is defined as words designed to destroy, hurt, damage, abuse, etc., then it is evil.

Example of teasing type: A pastor comes to a gathering at church wearing a clown suit. We can tease him. Why, because he is doing something funny or at least non-serious.

Example of destroying type: I mock someone’s nose or ears, eyes, muscles, body type, etc. That mocking will hurt. It is used to pound someone into submission, to take away credibility, to shut them up, etc.

This happened to the Lord Jesus in Luke 22:63-65.

God condemns this:

Proverbs 12:18 (EHV) Some people wield reckless words like the thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Proverbs 18:21 (EHV) Life and death lie in the power of a tongue, and those who love to use it will eat its fruit.

God sometimes mocks as judgment, particularly at pride. Consider:

  • Psalms 2:4 (BSB) The One enthroned in the heavens laughs; the Lord taunts them.
  • Psalms 37:12-13 (BSB) The wicked scheme against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them, 13 but the Lord laughs, seeing that their day is coming.

Mockery in punishment:

God’s punishments are often similar to the sin committed (Leviticus 24:20).

Proverbs 1:24-26 (BSB) Because you refused my call, and no one took my outstretched hand, 25 because you neglected all my counsel, and wanted none of my correction, 26 in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer when terror strikes you.
