John 4:27-30 (WEL) At this moment his disciples came and were amazed that he was talking with the woman, yet no one said, “What are you seeking?” or “Why are you talking with her?” 28 Then the woman left her water jar, went to the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything that I ever did. Isn’t this the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to him.
V27 At this moment his disciples came and were amazed that he was talking with the woman, yet no one said, “What are you seeking?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
Jews have no interaction with Samaritans lest they become defiled. Imagine the shock that Jesus, of all people, is speaking to a Samaritan and a woman. Shock of all shocks.
But Jesus seeks that which is lost.
Principle: Some people may appear unhealthy or not socially cleaned up and appropriate, but we are to witness to them, too.
V28 Then the woman left her water jar, went to the city, and said to the men,
This woman, by her actions, shows her faith in Jesus Christ. She is a believer, and I and all believers will meet her in heaven. Note her first action, she leaves everything and runs to the city to witness about the Messiah. She truly shows that she is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Compare James 2:18, Hebrews 11:31, and 1 Corinthians 6:11. She has a new priority. She wanted others to be saved; compare John 1:41-45, Isaiah 2:3-5, and Isaiah 52:7.
V29 “Come, see a man who told me everything that I ever did. Isn’t this the Christ?”
Short message but with the blessings of the Holy Spirit, it was used to open up people’s hearts and curiosity to come, see, and hear Jesus.
Principle: Tell what you know even if it is just your new faith and let the Holy Spirit work it out and apply the message.
V30 Then they went out of the city and came to him.
The results of her message.
We learn:
- True faith shows a change in attitude and way of life.
- True faith wants to witness for the good things Jesus has done in, on, and for us. Compare Mark 5:19-20.
