John 5:28-29 (WEL) “Don’t be amazed at this, for the time is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice. 29 “And will come out. Those who did good to the resurrection of life, and those who did evil to the resurrection of condemnation.
V28 “Don’t be amazed at this, for the time is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice.
All humans from Adam to the last will be resurrected. This type of resurrection is a permanent resurrection to never die again.
There are temporary resurrections where the person dies again.
- See OT examples: 1 Kings 17:17-24, 2 Kings 4:18–37, and 2 Kings 13:20–21.
- See NT examples: Luke 7:11–17, Luke 8:40–56, John 11:1–44, Matthew 27:50–53, Acts 9:36–42, and Acts 20:7–12.
The permanent resurrections are:
- Jesus and the First fruits—John 20, 1 Corinthians 15:23
- Rapture and Dead Believers—1 Thessalonians 4:15-17
- Two Witnesses—Revelation 11:1-13
- Martyred believers in Tribulation and the OT believers—Daniel 12:2-3, Job 19:25-27, Isaiah 26:19
- All the unbelievers (Last Resurrection)—Revelation 20:11-15
Whose voice is this? It is God’s voice; there is no other voice that can command this.
V29 “And will come out. Those who did good to the resurrection of life, and those who did evil to the resurrection of condemnation.
Doing good is to believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ and trusting Him alone for salvation.
God’s command to rise from the grave happens, for nothing God says is impossible (Luke 1:37). Here we note there are two permanent resurrections: 1) those who were recreated (2 Corinthians 5:17) and justified by faith in Jesus Christ alone (this happens at the Rapture) and 2) those who are evil, that is, never believed the Gospel of Jesus Christ (this happens at the end of the Millennium (Revelation 20:11-15). The first resurrection is for eternal life with God; the second resurrection is for eternal shame, torment, sorrow, darkness, anger, etc. It is the wrath of God.
We learn:
- It is good for our body, soul, and spirit to align with God’s ways, rules, worldview, lifestyle, etc.
- Jesus’s witness was enough, but He emphasizes that He relies on two other witnesses—His Father and the Holy Spirit.
Questions:
- How much of your attitude, decisions, and actions align with God’s?
- Are you ready for your resurrection?
- Will your resurrection be for heaven or hell?
