My Daily Thoughts—John 7:25-29

John 7:25-29 (WEL) Then some of those from Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this the one whom they seek to kill? 26 “Look, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers really know that this is truly the Christ? 27 “But we know where this man is from, but when Christ comes no one will know where he is from.” 28 Then Jesus shouted as he taught in the temple, saying, “You know me and know where I am from. I have not come on my own, on the contrary, he who sent me is true, whom you do not know. 29 “But I know him, for I am from him, and he has sent me.”

V25 Then some of those from Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this the one whom they seek to kill?

Some thought Jesus was demon possessed telling them that some wanted to kill Him.

Principle: Sinful nature often demands the death penalty for people who disagree with them.

Principle: People hated Jesus for exposing their sins, and when we preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ their sins are also exposed. They will want to kill us too (John 16:2, James 5:6, etc.).

V26 “Look, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers really know that this is truly the Christ?

The Greek word for boldly is G3954. παρρησία parrēsia, which means (Baker Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words) “The noun parrēsia describes a state of confidence or boldness, often within the context of speaking before a public audience.”

The reason no one says anything is that they fear the crowd (Mark 11:18, Mark 12:12, and Matthew 21:25). What they want to do must be done at night and quietly (Luke 22:52).

Principle: The Spirit of God gives us boldness. Compare: Isaiah 11:2, Isaiah 61:1, and John 3:34 (Jesus) and Acts 4:29-31 (believers).

V27 “But we know where this man is from, but when Christ comes no one will know where he is from.”

Do they know where He is from? They assumed Jesus was born in Nazareth, but He was born in Bethlehem and had witnesses to that effect: 1) the shepherds (Luke 2:15-18), 2) Anna (Luke 2:36) and Simeon (Luke 2:34), 3) the priests that circumcised Him and accepted Mary’s offering after a male birth (Luke 2:24 and Leviticus 12:6-8).

They were obviously wrong about “no one will know where he is from.” See Micah 5:2.

V28 Then Jesus shouted as he taught in the temple, saying, “You know me and know where I am from. I have not come on my own, on the contrary, he who sent me is true, whom you do not know.

Jesus tells the truth. He had a physical birth in Bethlehem. His heavenly origin is from eternity, He has no beginning. See John 1:1, Colossians 1:16-17, John 8:58 (Exodus 3:14), Hebrews 13:8, Revelation 1:8, etc.

AskAndyAI:

Here is a brief, clear summary of the eternity of our Lord Jesus Christ as taught in Scripture:

• Eternal Deity: Jesus is the second Person of the one Triune God — eternally existent, coequal with the Father and the Spirit, and the Creator of all things.

• Incarnation: In eternity, He stepped into time by taking on human flesh — becoming fully God and fully Man — so He could represent us.

• Sinless Life and Substitution: He lived a perfect, sinless life on our behalf and bore the wrath of God against sin by dying as our substitutionary sacrifice.

• Resurrection and Vindication: God raised Him bodily from the dead, vindicating His claims and proving the power and truth of His work.

• Exaltation and Priesthood: After His resurrection, He ascended and is now exalted at the right hand of the Father, serving as our High Priest and Advocate.

• Present Work and Promise: The Lord has given the Holy Spirit to convict and call sinners to trust in Christ alone for salvation. Saving faith in Christ is fully sufficient and secures eternal life.

• Future Return: He will return — first to take His Church to Himself, and then visibly with His saints to establish His earthly Kingdom.

“In short: the eternal Son of God became man, accomplished our redemption by His life, death, and resurrection, now reigns in glory, and will return to consummate His Kingdom. Salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone, and that faith, when received, is fully saving and eternally secure.”

Jesus was sent the Son (John 3:16, John 7:29, Isaiah 9:6, etc.).

V29 “But I know him, for I am from him, and he has sent me.”

Jesus does know God the Father.

The Greek word for know is G1492 εἴδω eídō, which means to see. Here, it is meaning “I have seen Him and know Him.”

He is from Him meaning the God the Father sent Him.

We learn:

  • About the deity of Jesus Christ.
  • We tell the truth but are rejected.

Questions:

  • Do you accept that Jesus Christ is God the Son?
  • Will you tell the truth even if you are rejected?
