My Daily Thoughts—Mark 1:29-34

Mark 1:29-34 (NKJV)

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed

(Matt. 8:14, 15; Luke 4:38, 39)

29 Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. 31 So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them.

Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset

(Matt. 8:16, 17; Luke 4:40, 41)

32 At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

V29 “Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.” After the healing of the demon-possessed man, I’m sure there were a lot of questions and discussions.

V30 “But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once.” Jesus was informed of Peter’s sick mother-in-law. They had confidence in Jesus’s power.

V31 “So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them.” Jesus did not touch the demon-possessed man, but He frequently touched the sick. The sickness was healed immediately. Jesus has authority over demons and sickness. We will learn more about Jesus as we read further. Every healing was with compassion.

V32 “At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed.” After sunset (ending the Sabbath), many came to be healed. They showed faith in Jesus’s ability to heal, yet, sadly, did not believe that Jesus is Messiah. The greatest sickness to need healing is sin (Romans 6:23). Sin condemns us to God’s wrath and eventually the Lake of Fire. Sin can be healed. See Isaiah 53:5-6, Psalm 41:4, Psalm 147:3, and Jeremiah 3:22.

V33 “And the whole city was gathered together at the door.” From all quarters, any who were sick came to Jesus themselves or by others helping them.

V34 “Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.” He did not allow anyone to think that he was approved, commended, or testifying by demons. He did have others testify—1 John 5:9, John 3:32-33, and John 5:34.

We learn:

  • The omnipotent ability and authority of the Lord Jesus.
  • He did not touch demon-possessed people.
  • Many came to be healed physically.

Questions:

  • Why didn’t Jesus accept testimony from demons?
  • Has God ever healed you by prayer or other means?
  • Have you prayed for others, and God heard your prayer?
