My Daily Thoughts—2 Corinthians 8:5-7

2 Corinthians 8:5-7 (WEL) It is not just what we hoped for, but first they gave themselves to the Lord, then to us through God’s will. 6 We encouraged Titus in what he had started, so he would complete this same grace to you. 7 So since you abound in all faith, speech, knowledge, diligence, and love for us, see to it that you abound in this grace, too.

V5 It is not just what we hoped for, but first they gave themselves to the Lord, then to us through God’s will.

Paul is writing about the Macedonian believers. Note the order: 1) the Lord (Jesus), then 2) the Apostles (Paul in this case). The priority is the Lord Jesus. Compare Matthew 6:33 and Colossians 3:17.

The “giving” refers to dedication, servanthood, and readiness to do God’s will. Compare Romans 12:1-2.

The Macedonian believers know that they are children of God the Father and servants of God the Son, the Lord of the church (all believers).

V6 We encouraged Titus in what he had started, so he would complete this same grace to you.

Evidently Titus had made a plan and started the process for this giving sacrifice. Now, Paul encourages Titus and the Corinthian believers to complete the giving and bless their fellow believers in Jerusalem. Compare 1 Corinthians 16:1.

V7 So since you abound in all faith, speech, knowledge, diligence, and love for us, see to it that you abound in this grace, too.

God has blessed the Corinthians with spiritual gifts; now, it is the time to use the gift of giving and generosity.

Tyndale Open Study Notes: “This is the key verse in Paul’s exposition on Christian giving (8:1–9:15). The Corinthians had a reputation for spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 1:5-7; 14:12). Now, they must be leaders in this gracious act of giving, which is a hallmark of true spirituality (cp. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13). God had been lavish in his goodness to the Corinthians, so they should be generous to the Jewish believers in their need (2 Corinthians 9:13). This would be recognized as a sign of unity in Christ.”

We learn:

  • Giving is a spiritual gift.
  • Giving is a sign of love, especially for the brethren.
  • To finish what we begin.

Questions:

  • How do you view giving to believers?
  • Have you given yourself to God for whatever service He has for you?
