John 14:19–21 (WEL) “Yet in a little while, the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, and because I live, you will also live. 20 “On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 “The one who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I will love him and clearly show myself to him.”
V19 “Yet in a little while, the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, and because I live, you will also live.
This refers to the time from His body being removed from the Cross to the time of His resurrection. This has been estimated as about 30 hours. From His resurrection to His ascension, He was seen only by believers. Compare 1 Corinthians 15:6.
Jesus’s resurrection guarantees our resurrection. He said so, so it is so. Everything Jesus said was true and has been fulfilled, is being fulfilled, or will be in the future.

V20 “On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
On that day refers to Resurrection Day.
The day of Jesus’s resurrection and the day of our resurrection (1 Thessalonians 4:14–17) will confirm what Jesus has stated. Jesus is teaching the doctrine of the Trinity, that is, one God in three persons. Each person in the Trinity has the complete essence of God, that is, the stuff that God is (spirit) and the character traits of God.
The Holy Spirit, given at Pentecost, indwells every believer. See Romans 8:9, 1 Corinthians 3:16, and 2 Timothy 1:14.
We are one with God when our purpose, service, loyalty, and life seek to glorify God and promote His kingdom.
V21 “The one who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I will love him and clearly show myself to him.”
Kings want loyalty, faithfulness, honor, and love. We show this by our obedience. Obedience implies faith. Moses could not enter the promised land because when God commanded him to speak to the rock, Moses struck it 2 times. God rebukes Moses for not believing Him (Numbers 20:12). The same condemnation was upon Israel, too (Numbers 9:23–24). Rahab showed she believed because of her obedience (Hebrews 11:31 with Joshua 2:9).
We learn:
- Jesus is a prophet.
- As a prophet, He knew the details of the prophecy. He did not just pronounce some nebulous or vague prediction.
- Jesus is one with God.
- True love for God is seen in our obedience to His rules. No one is perfect but must have desire and strive to obey. Blamelessness is required.
